Our inheritance is, heaven. It is the sum total of all God has promised us in salvation.
The entirety of our inheritance will be given to us at the moment we die here on earth and go to be with God in eternity.
Meanwhile as we walk out life here on earth, we are in possession of a down payment if you will, of the fullness that will be ours in completion when the time comes. We also have God’s unbreakable promise that we will receive our full inheritance.
The understanding of this inheritance is the energizer and motivator for our life here on earth. The entire purpose for our existence here takes on a new and deeper meaning and purpose. It is exciting and it truly changes everything about everything!!!
So, we left off on the last page with being born again. We were born once, physically. Please follow me on this technical detail. We cannot be unborn physically, on our own or by someone else. We cannot crawl back inside of our birth mother’s uterus/womb.
This second birth is a spiritual one. Please follow me again on this technical detail. Just as we cannot be unborn physically, if we were truly born again in the spiritual birth, we cannot be unborn spiritually, on our own, or by someone else. Key word is if we were truly born again. Being born again is not about saying certain words, it is not a magic wand waved over us with someone saying “hocus pocus.”
Being born again is an incredible realization and understanding, it is a heart transplant, it is eyes that see and ears that hear to a depth and level of comprehension that we cannot simply self will. It is from this realization that we are changed from the inside out. We all walk out what we believe we are, in our thoughts, words, attitudes, outward behaviors, decisions, coping mechanisms. Psychology and scripture both attest to that.
What exactly happens in that spiritual birth, in being born again, and how does that change us in the here and now, from the inside out?
At that time God gives you a brand new Godly heart through His Holy Spirit, as it tells us in the following verse: Ezekiel 36:26-27. “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit will I put within you, and I will take away the heart of stone out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My spirit within you and bring it about that you will walk in My statutes and you will keep My ordinances and do [them]”
What follows is
- Our destination when we die here on earth, is now to everlasting life with God. Heaven (Colossians 1:10-14).
- The flesh (our sin nature) is crucified through the cross of Christ (Galatians 5:24).
- We are dead in the sense that the old unbelieving self (soul) has died (Romans 7:1-6, Romans 8:2,4).
- Our old stony heart has been removed and has been replaced with a new heart of flesh (soft, pliable) with God’s laws written on it (Deuteronomy 30:6, Jeremiah 24:7, Ezekiel 36:26-27, John 3:3).
- We have been given the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).
- We are a new creation, a new soul (2 Corinthians 5:17).
- Our source of strength is “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). This is why the joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10)!
We have an incredibly beautiful new identity, for here and for eternity. Our inheritance! Please read these verses. I wrote out a “preaching the Gospel to myself” essay based on these verses, and I encourage you to read it aloud, allowing God’s words to pour over you, and allowing His truth to sink deep into your heart. I have heard it said that we should preach the Gospel to ourselves daily. It is truly a beneficial habit because it brings our focus up to God and to the incredible gift we have in Him. His truth is empowering, strengthening and reminds us of the provision we have in in, no matter what we face in this life here on earth. Believing deeper changes us from the inside out and as the inside is being changed and strengthened, what pours out of us in how we feel, speak, and do changes as well. It is so beautiful!
I, _________________am strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified me to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.
For He rescued me from the domain of darkness, and transferred me to the kingdom of His beloved Son. And although I was formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled me in His fleshly body through death, in order to present me before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach if indeed I continue in the faith, firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that I have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven.
Therefore as I have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so I walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in my faith, just as I was instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.
See to it that no one takes me captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him I have been made complete. He is the head over all rule and authority. In Him I was also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with Him in baptism, in which I was also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
When I was dead in my transgressions and the uncircumcision of my flesh, He made me alive together with Him, having forgiven me all my transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against me, which was hostile to me; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.
What shall I say then? Am I to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall I who died to sin still live in it? Or do I not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore I have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so I too might walk in newness of life. For if I have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly I shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that my old self was crucified with Him, in order that my body of sin might be done away with, so that I would no longer be a slave to sin; for I who has died is freed from sin.
Now if I have died with Christ, I believe that I shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider myself to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Therefore thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, that I am about to act, but for the sake of My holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness of My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate My holiness before their eyes.
I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. And I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses.
Positionally we ARE all of this and we POSSESS, all of this, FOREVER.
